After more than 40 years of use, silicone oil was found to cause a decrease in human immune function or cause cancer in the early 1990s, and its use was banned in Europe and the United States. At that time, American companies that produced silicone gel prostheses were sued and lost a lot of money. In the past two years, due to the discovery that the causes of cancer in women undergoing breast augmentation are more complicated, silicone oil has been opened for use in Europe, but it is still banned in the United States.
Some silicone oil-based products are slightly corrosive, so care should be taken during transportation and production.
