Applications of Fluorosilicone Rubber

Fluorosilicone rubber is used in pumps, pipe joints, and equipment containers to seal chemical substances such as inorganic acids and organics in the chemical industry.

In terms of construction material manufacturing: Fluorosilicone rubber can be used as a sealing rubber ring for cement single-storage pumps, and its service life is about ten times longer than that of natural rubber.

The fluorosilicone rubber compound can be used to produce various specifications of oil-resistant, heat-resistant, ageing-resistant, and high-temperature resistant low- and medium-pressure hoses.

Grades of Fluorosilicone Rubber

01/

High-temperature grades: Grading fluorosilicone based on tolerance to temperature is critical because it helps you identify which grade is suitable for your application. For instance, the American Military Standard (AMS) requires fluorosilicone rubber temperature range to attain extremely high temperatures for it to be applicable. Most manufacturers can produce high–temperature grades.

02/

Low-temperature grade: Low-temperature environments such as polar regions and cryogenics also need products made from fluorosilicone. As such, this is a much-needed grade of fluorosilicone. Most of these grades have durometers ranging from 30 – 80. That implies this grade can be used to make both soft and hard fluorosilicone products.

03/

Food-grade fluorosilicone: The Food and drugs administration (FDA) is a body that regulates the manufacture of products that are used with foods. One of the core mandates is to ensure these products are safe.

04/

Electrical grade: Fluorosilicone rubber chemical compatibility is a good insulator. This means it is a poor conductor of electric currents.

Key Features of Fluorosilicone Rubber

High shrinkage rate: Shrinkage means size contraction. In this case, it means fluorosilicone reduces in size at a huge than expected rate. This is a characteristic that results from tight bonds caused by the polymerization and cross-linking processes.

Low tear strength: Tear strength is expressed as the force required to rip apart a material. Low strength implies that the force needed is low and vice versa. Therefore, it means fluorosilicone requires low strength to tear it apart.

Low friction: Friction is the resistance experienced when one surface is rubbing against another. It is also known as abrasion. In more technical terms, it is a force that opposes the movement of bodies that come into contact.

High resistance to mineral oils and fuels: Chemical resistance is a desirable property. Mineral oils and fuels are made of organic and inorganic chemicals that can affect various materials. Fluorosilicone is one of the elastomers that resist the diminishing effects of these compounds.

Solvent resistance: The environment consists of many types of solvents whether natural or synthetic that can corrode, age, or halt the performance of elastomers. Fluorosilicone is among the few that resist different solvents. These include both polar and non-polar solvents.

Extreme temperature resistance: Fluorosilicone is among the top synthetic rubbers with the highest thermal stability you can find today. Thermal stability refers to the ability to tolerate extremely high temperatures for extended periods.

Resilience: This property can be defined as the overall ability to last long in harsh environmental conditions. This capability makes it a superior material to its counterparts.

Production Process of Fluorosilicone Rubber

Mix: Although fluorosilicone rubber is solid, it has high plasticity and does not require mastication. It can be directly mixed using an open mill or internal mixer.

Heat treatment: The main purpose of heat treatment is to further combine the structure control agent with silica and to eliminate low molecular volatiles.

Filter: For extruded products, calendered products, rubber-coated products, and diaphragm products, mechanical impurities and undispersed compound particles are one of the main factors leading to product quality problems. Therefore, the rubber used in the above products must be filtered.

Return to refining: After the rubber is parked, the gel content increases and the plasticity decreases, so it must be re-melted before use.

Vulcanization: Fluorosilicone rubber is different from other ordinary rubbers in that vulcanization is completed in one stage and two stages. The short first-stage vulcanization time (1.5-15 minutes) can only make the product finalized; only after the second-stage vulcanization (3-6 hours) can complete vulcanization be achieved, and the physical properties of the vulcanized rubber can become stable.

Storage Method of Fluorosilicone Rubber

The storage temperature should be around 25˚C, and products should be stored away from direct sources of heat. The storage should be in a dry area. The products should be protected from direct sunlight, UV and artificial light that has a high UV content. Products should be protected from all sources of ionising radiation.

Storage rooms should not contain any equipment capable of generating ozone. Rubber should be stored free from superimposed tensions and compressive stresses or other causes of deformation. Do not hang sealing rings! Rubber should not come into contact with liquid or semi-liquid materials or their vapours at any time during storage, unless these materials are an integral part of the product or the manufacturer’s packaging.

FAQ

Q: What is the use of fluorosilicone rubber?

A: Typical applications include static seals in fuel systems for cars and in aerospace engineering as well as diaphragm valves for crankcase ventilation. Fluorosilicone rubber is also used in hoses, e.G. Turbocharger hoses, and in o-rings.

Q: What is the difference between silicone and fluorosilicone rubber?

A: Fluorosilicone is also less prone to swelling and shrinking, making it more stable in different environments. Hardness is another key difference between silicone and fluorosilicone. Silicone typically has a shore hardness of anywhere from 20 to 80 on the shore a scale, while fluorosilicone can range from 40 to 80.

Q: Is fluorocarbon rubber toxic?

A: If used with adequate ventilation, the commonly used fluorocarbons rarely cause human health problems other than mild skin irritation.

Q: Is a fluoroelastomer rubber or plastic?

A: Fluoroelastomers are rubbers that are frequently used in space applications and are typically selected for their low outgassing properties, temperature tolerance, and proven history in successful space missions.

Q: What is fluoro rubber made of?

A: Fluoro rubber is obtained by polymerising vinylidene fluoride with the addition of fluorinated monomers. The process gives rise to differently structured co-, ter- or tetrapolymers with fluorine contents ranging from 65 to 71 percent. They are cured with bisphenol af, peroxides or diamines.

Q: What is the difference between rubber and fluoro rubber?

A: Compared to other synthetic rubbers, fluoro rubber has outstanding heat resistance, oil resistance, and chemical resistance. This is due to the extremely strong c-f bond (fluorine bond) in the copolymerization composition.

Q: Is fluoroelastomer the same as silicone?

A: Although silicone and fluororubber are quite similar in their properties, the fluorine groups (trifluoropropyl) provide significant differences in chemical resistance and compatibility, resulting in a broader range of applications.
